Failure To Trust God - The Sin That Ensnares
May 11, 2026
“Hebrews 12:1-2 Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”
Reflection
9th November 2023 When I meditated on this passage on 3 May 2023, I was in the midst of my trial (IPP). During the trial, I had experienced God's mercies and grace as He provided a cloud of witnesses of God's love for me - angels and brothers/ sisters-in-Christ, who had comforted and encouraged me with their prayers. There were also witnesses at the trial who testified in my favour. Yet, I was constantly reminded by Godly witnesses not to rely on my own strength or allow thoughts of anger, bitterness, despair and pride to consume me. These would be the sin that ensnared - the failure to trust God completely. This trial was started by the Lord and He will see it to completion to achieve His purpose: calling me back to Him and rescuing me from the sinful ways of the world; transforming me by the renewal of my mind.
Application
1. We thank God for both His sovereign will and providence. His timing is always perfect when He provides for our every need. 2. We thank God also for His witnesses - people who encourage us and walk with us when we are troubled or in despair. 3. Ultimately, we thank our Lord Jesus Christ, who Himself faithfully obeyed God to the cross. He willingly died for us, His bride, so that we may be joined in union with Him and be co-heirs with Him in the kingdom of heaven. And He looked at this union with us as something to behold with great joy! 4. Let us, therefore, not be downcast in our trials, but endure them, for our patient and trusting dependence on God's provision and deliverance will be rewarded with the unsurpassable joy of knowing God and His Son!
Thank you, Lord, for being the author and perfecter of my faith!
