How Does God Speak?
May 12, 2026
“Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Psalm 37:4 Delight yourself also in the LORD, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.”
Reflection
27th November 2023 Over the years, I have heard testimonies of how God has spoken to various people in different ways. He speaks through His Word and operates in our thoughts and conscience, but our thoughts can be clouded by what is in our hearts; hence, the importance of delighting in the Lord (as we read in Psalm 37:4). The Spirit and the Word are consistent when prompting us and they affirm our actions as being in step with God by giving us comfort, peace and joy when we obey. However, God also communicates directly with us through our five senses, as I had recorded in my journal: ● Sight – GL saw the giant hand of God covering her as she lay awake in bed and she felt a comfort that she had never previously experienced; ● Smell – God had spoken to Cleo through visions, accompanied by a fragrance, when she was a child; ● Touch – Pastor G had shared that he could feel a tingling sensation on his skin when God communicated with him. KDL had also shared that she had experienced a heavy weight upon her, rendering her unable to move. She described this as the Lord’s weight of glory. ● Hearing – the audible voice of God is rare, I feel, but some profess to have heard Him speak. (KDL testified of this). ● Taste – I have not heard testimonies regarding God presenting Himself as a taste on the tongue, but we all know that we can taste and see that the Lord is good!
Application
It is important for us to discern the voice of God and to know His specific will for us - for I believe that we are all created with a purpose and a role to play in God's plan. At the very least, we are to be His royal preisthood and holy nation, sharing the good news of the gospel where we are sent. Am I able to be still and quiet enough to hear God speak? How can I cut out the noise and clutter from my life, which are affecting my ability to receive instruction from Him?
Dear Lord, I want to be in union with You and to know You more and more. Holy Spirit, give me the divine wisdom to discern what God is doing in my life, that I may understand and embrace the storms in my life. Thank You for Your Word, which has convicted me of my sin in being led by the flesh, which leads to death. I now desire to be led by Your Spirit. Speak, O Lord! I am listening.
