Do Not Replace God's Fountain of Living Waters With Our Broken Cisterns
May 24, 2026
“Jeremiah 2:11-13: But My people have changed their Glory For what does not profit. 12 Be astonished, O heavens, at this, And be horribly afraid; Be very desolate,” says the Lord. 13 “For My people have committed two evils: They have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters, And hewn themselves cisterns—broken cisterns that can hold no water.””
Reflection
21st July 2024 God's love for us is unconditional, as is His grace. Yet, I had spent many years building broken cisterns that held no water. These broken cisterns were my career, my own strength, my financial resources and my pride. These things I now count as rubbish! In place of our broken cisterns, God has promised “…to give (us)…houses full of all good things, which (we) did not fill, hewn-out wells which (we) did not dig, vineyards and olive trees which (we) did not plant.” Deuteronomy 6:10–11, NKJV. But the prerequisite to receiving God's promise is in Deuteronomy 6:5: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.
Application
God’s complete unmerited favour and love have been generously given to me, but to receive His abundant blessings, I have to stop building up treasures that moth and dust will eat away. God is all I need and He should/must fill every thought and desire of mine. What am I still clinging to in this world? What is of such value to me that if I lose it, I will fall into despair? Am I willing to lose my life for Christ that I may gain it? Matthew 16:25-26 25 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. 26 For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? Philippians 3:7-8 7 But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ. 8 Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ…
Dear Lord Jesus, forgive me for building broken cisterns that hold no water. I now surrender all that I once considered of value in exchange for the gospel - Your free gift of abundant life, both now and for all eternity. I thank You for Your salvation and the trials that will sanctify me, so that I may be set apart as holy and righteous because of the work of the Holy Spirit in me. I submit to the will of the Holy Spirit, so that everything I say and do will glorify God. In Jesus' name, Amen.
