Where Is My Treasure?
May 7, 2026
“Matthew 6:19-21 19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.””
Reflection
27th October 2023, Friday I shared with my small group tonight that I had been getting up later in the morning because I had reduced my job scope and did not have as much work as before. There was a sense of emptiness, perhaps a lack of purpose, although I knew that was not entirely true, since I still had responsibilities in QH. It could be that I, like many others, equated my self-worth relative to my earnings. This would be wrong. Both Gina and Ron shared their experiences when they each went through their no-work phase. Ron’s desert phase was when his company had just started and was struggling to keep afloat, whilst Gina’s was when she had quit from her previous company without a job and struggled for six months to find employment. Both spent their months meditating on God’s Word and also reading books by Christian authors. Gina said she kept looking for joy in Joel Osteen’s books, although she admitted that it was God who finally blessed her with a job which ‘landed in her lap’. Their assurance to me was to continue fixing my eyes on Jesus and He would take care of my daily needs. I did not need to worry about where my next job would come from, if at all – God had already taken care of that.
Application
What defines me and gives me a sense of purpose? If I find purpose and place my confidence in things that are temporary or perishable, then I will be upset and, possibly, depressed when my life does not go according to plan. What, then, is eternal; and Who is the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end? That's where my treasure is!
I thank You, Lord, for loving me and reminding me to place my trust in You. I have eternal life and I am a co-heir of the kingdom of God and all His treasures, because of Your sacrifice on the cross. Help me let go of the rubbish I once held dear - my career, my earthly resources and, even, my reputation. You are all I need. Amen.
