In Humility, Comfort Others in the Way God has Comforted Us
May 18, 2026
“2 Corinthians 1:3-4 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God Philippians 2:1–4 Therefore if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and mercy, 2 fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. 3 Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. 4 Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.”
Reflection
18th April 2024 Today, the Holy Spirit pointed me to 2 Corinthians 1:3-4: 3 and Philippians 2:1-4. LW (wife) had pointed these truths to me previously, that God has a purpose for my circumstances. He is preparing me to be an encourager and comforter to others who are or will be going through similar trials. In so doing, I can be a bearer of Good News, the gospel of hope in Christ, my redeemer and perfecter of my faith. There is a pre-requisite to serving God as His comforter to the weak. I, myself, must be humble, drawing strength from the Lord and not being dependent on my ‘earthly cisterns’, idols or human wisdom. He had revealed this to me earlier this week, when He had drawn me back to Zephaniah 3:17: The LORD your God in your midst, The Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing. The pre-requisite for His joy over me is my humility before Him, acknowledging Him as my one true God, my Creator and my Saviour. He is my Jehovah Nissi, and His banner over me is love: Zephaniah 3:11-12 In that day you shall not be shamed for any of your deeds In which you transgress against Me; For then I will take away from your midst Those who rejoice in your pride, And you shall no longer be haughty In My holy mountain. 12 I will leave in your midst A meek and humble people, And they shall trust in the name of the LORD.
Application
Jesus is our role model - when treated with the greatest violence a man could face, He chose to forgive. In forgiving us, Jesus paid the price for our sins and justice was done. We are justified by Christ's sacrifice on the cross. Therefore, in our trials, know that God loves us. In humility, we will be filled with the peace of God and we shall find it natural to trust in the name of the Lord. And the Lord our God shall rejoice over us with singing!
Lord Jesus, I love You and I know You first loved me. Forgive my pride and as I come to You in humble spirit, I ask that You make me new in You. As You have promised me in 2 Corinthians 12:9, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness,” let me boast in my trials, that Your power may rest upon me. Guide me as I comfort others with Your Word. I speak the Name of Jesus in victory and I know that all things will work for the good of those who love You. I ask all this for Your Name’s sake. Amen!
