I Will Be Your God and You Shall Be My Son
May 13, 2026
“Revelation 21:3–7 3 And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God. 4 And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.” 5 Then He who sat on the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new.” And He said to me, “Write, for these words are true and faithful.” 6 And He said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts. 7 He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son. ”
Reflection
7th January 2024 (Sunday) I encountered this passage in Revelation chapter 21 three times over the past 24 hours. It started off with my quiet time on Saturday morning, when I meditated on verses 4-7, then John 14:1-4, where I was assured by Jesus’s promise that He had prepared a room for me in the Father’s house. Nothing on this earth will rob me of this future, a future where I am a co-heir and co-ruler with Christ, where I am a child of God, inheriting all things in God’s kingdom. Romans 8:16-18 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. 17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory. 18 I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. On Saturday afternoon, Crystal shared that Rev 21:4 had comforted her in her dad’s passing, because her earthly father had received God’s grace and blessing of eternal life. Then this morning, in church, we had a scripture reading and song from Revelation 21:6, reminding me that God is the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End. However, God has also impressed upon my heart that this passage from Revelation 21 is preceded by a period of Satanic rebellion, when God releases Satan from prison after Christ had returned and reigned for a thousand years (Revelation 20:7). Why does God do that? I do not know for certain, but I believe it is God’s final chance to the people to choose Him or the devil. Indeed, Satan will go out to deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle, whose number is as the sand of the sea (Revelation 20:8). Alas, many will still reject God, even after Christ has returned to rule.
Application
There is no difference in my life today. I live in a world where the devil is prowling around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour (1Peter 5:8). My current trials are traps set by the devil to tempt me to reject Christ and blame Him for allowing these things to happen. It is not by coincidence that God constantly reminds me to glory in tribulation, because it produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope (Romans 5:3-5). My hope lies in the knowledge that Jesus loves me, a truth revealed by the Holy Spirit in me, who is also a gift from the Lord. 2 Corinthians 1:21-22: Now it is God who makes (me) stand firm in Christ. He anointed (me), set his seal of ownership on (me), and put his Spirit in (my) heart as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come. 2024 will not be an easy year for me (well, none of the last 3 years has been easy)! But God will equip me for battle. Just as the sword of His Spirit endows me with His divine wisdom and power, the full armour of God includes the belt of Truth, which is the Word; the assurance of the helmet of Salvation; and the shoes of the gospel of Peace, which transcends all understanding and which will guard my heart and mind against the lies of the devil. (Ephesians 6:10-20) I have nothing to fear.
Abba Father, You are my God and I am Your son. Thank You for freely giving me the water of the fountain of life. Help me overcome my fear and doubts and give me the strength not to yield unto the temptation of self-reliance and the folly of human wisdom. In surrendering my heart to You, I choose to follow You because my present suffering is not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in me. I pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.
